Mandrill + MailChimp Transition FAQs

Between March 16 and April 27, 2016, existing Mandrill accounts could be merged with a MailChimp account as part of the changes announced earlier in the year.

As of May 11, 2016, any remaining Mandrill accounts that weren't linked to a MailChimp account have been disabled and can no longer be accessed. All Mandrill accounts will be now be created and accessed through MailChimp. Learn More.

On Feb. 24, 2016, we emailed our users to announce some major upcoming changes to Mandrill. On a high level, these changes will help us focus on our core users who need both bulk and transactional email. This transition is intended to remove the burden of using 2 separate systems, with templates and customer data in separate places. We know there a lot of people who use Mandrill as a utilitarian infrastructure service. We think they deserve a service that's set up for that in the long run, and expect that Mandrill may not be the right fit for them. Going forward, all Mandrill users will be required to have a paid monthly MailChimp account and verify ownership of all sending domains.

This is a big change, and we’ve gotten a lot of questions. In this article, we answer some of the most common questions and concerns.

How much will Mandrill cost?

Mandrill credits will be sold in blocks of 25,000 emails. The price of these blocks starts at $20. We built discounts into our payment structure, so your per-email pricing automatically decreases as you send more email. Use Mandrill’s Pricing Calculator to see how these pricing changes will affect different volumes of transactional emails.

You’ll choose the number of blocks to purchase for each month at the beginning of your MailChimp account’s billing cycle. Each block expires at the end of the account’s billing cycle. You’ll also have the option to purchase additional blocks at any time, and can configure your account to automatically add additional blocks if credits run low. These additional blocks will be purchased at same price as those selected at the beginning of the billing cycle.

What about additional paid features in Mandrill?

Several features that previously incurred additional fees in Mandrill are being provided for users at no additional cost once the accounts have been merged with a paid monthly MailChimp account. Sending scheduled emails is available at no additional cost, and Mandrill will store email content for 30 days at no additional charge.

Dedicated IP addresses for sending transactional emails will still be available within Mandrill. Mandrill’s dedicated IP pricing ($29.95/month for each IP) isn’t changing. See About Dedicated IP Addresses for more information.

Is this cost included in my MailChimp plan?

No. Mandrill is becoming a paid add-on for monthly MailChimp accounts. Any paid monthly MailChimp plan will satisfy the new requirements. Monthly MailChimp plans start at $10/month, and you can find more information on MailChimp’s Pricing Page. Purchasing Mandrill blocks will incur monthly charges in addition to your MailChimp plan.

We have an existing MailChimp account on a monthly plan. Do we get any discounts?

If you had a paid monthly MailChimp account before March 16 and merge it with an existing Mandrill account by April 27, your first million monthly Mandrill email credits will be free for a year.

What will happen to our account balance?

Any outstanding balance for Mandrill accounts that are merged with a paid monthly MailChimp account will be converted to MonkeyRewards Credits, which can then be used to purchase blocks of emails within Mandrill.

Does a Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) MailChimp Account qualify?

No. The Mandrill billing model requires a monthly billing cycle, so you’ll need a monthly MailChimp account, not PAYG. If you want to convert from PAYG to monthly, MailChimp will automatically convert your remaining PAYG credits to MonkeyRewards and then immediately apply those to the monthly plan purchased. How does the Domain Verification requirement affect me?

If you signed up for Mandrill after Dec. 1, 2015, this requirement already affects your account. Accounts created before Dec. 1, 2015, must now add SPF and DKIM records and verify ownership of any sending domains in Mandrill. Will my current set-up continue to work?

Aside from requiring sending domains to be properly configured, these changes will not affect any integrations with Mandrill. Any existing API keys will continue to work, and our API endpoints and functionality aren’t changing. Other features such as webhooks, subaccounts, and inbound email processing also won’t require any changes.

When will these changes affect my account?

We made this announcement on Feb. 24, 2016 in order to give our users sufficient time to consider their options. These changes went into effect for new accounts on March 16, 2016, but existing accounts have until April 27, 2016 to merge with a paid MailChimp account.

I have multiple Mandrill and/or MailChimp accounts. How will this affect me?

The new merge process will allow each Mandrill account to link with one MailChimp account, and each MailChimp account can only be connected with one Mandrill account.

Am I required to import/move my Mandrill recipient data into a MailChimp list?

The number of Mandrill blocks purchased each month doesn’t need to match the number of subscribers in your MailChimp plan. The core functionality of Mandrill isn’t changing at this time, and the recipients of your transactional emails sent through Mandrill are not required to be subscribers in your MailChimp account. Any paid monthly MailChimp plan will satisfy the new requirements.

We have MailChimp Pro. Does Mandrill incur an additional monthly charge?

MailChimp Pro users on a paid monthly plan will receive two transactional email blocks (50,000 emails) each billing cycle at no additional charge. These free blocks are available after March 16, 2016 to monthly Pro users who merge their existing Mandrill accounts or those that activate a new add-on Mandrill account. Any additional blocks that are purchased will be billed at the normal rate.
